Veneers in Gulfport, Mississippi
What are veneers?
Veneers are a cosmetic dental procedure in which a thin layer of porcelain or composite material is placed over the outside of the tooth. They are used to improve aesthetics or help with tooth damage. Veneers are usually only done to the part of the teeth that are visible when talking or smiling. The procedure can be direct or indirect.
The direct technique usually involves placing composite resin on the outside of the tooth using bonding. Because of that, the direct technique is usually referred to as bonding.
The indirect technique usually involves two appointments because the veneers are fabricated at a dental laboratory. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared, impressions are taken, and the teeth are given a temporary covering. The veneers are back from the laboratory after two or three weeks. The temporaries are removed, and the veneers are bonded to the teeth. The laboratory fabricated veneers are usually made using porcelain or pressed ceramic, and are aesthetically pleasing.
What makes a good candidate for porcelain veneers?
A good candidate for dental and porcelain veneers varies from case to case. Since veneering your teeth is an irreversible procedure, if you have your tooth structure removed, you’ll have to visit our Gulfport dental office for an examination. To give you an idea, a bad candidate for pressed or ceramic veneers would include:
- Unhealthy teeth, dental decay or those with gum disease.
- Weakened teeth by missing tooth structure.
- Teeth with little to no enamel present.
- Those who clench or grind their teeth, although this could be solved by a nightguard.
- Those without a stable bite.
- Misaligned or malpositioned teeth.
Veneers vs crowns
The advantage of veneers versus dental crowns is that much less of the tooth material has to be removed, and the procedure is generally less uncomfortable. Veneers are recommended for patients who have large fillings or little tooth structure.
Caring for your veneers
Just like your original teeth, teeth restored by way of veneers require you to stay on top of current oral hygiene best practices. This includes brushing your teeth, flossing and using mouthwash daily and in between meals. Regular checkups are highly recommended to ensure your veneers are in the best shape possible.
